Posted on: 12/Nov/2019 9:51:19 AM
Earlier, the cut off date for enrolling bore wells and open wells present in the residential complexes in Chennai city was 10th November.

The news that has come out is this date has been extended to 25th November 2019 now by the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board or CMWSSB.

It was mentioned by an official belonging to CMWSSB that the decision to extend the date was taken after receiving just 200 completed applications from the residents. It must be taken into account that CMWSSB along with GCC is conducting zone wise exercise to collect data on the number of bore wells. The details about the bore wells could be submitted by the people in 3 modes such as collecting and filling application forms from the metro water area offices, by downloading online applications and by online registration.

It is worthy to note that a lot of applications were received from the area offices but data from these applications have not been collated. Point is data collected on bore wells from households that would help in understanding the quantity of water being drawn by the houses and apartment complexes plus the piped water supply of metro water. Information, whether the defunct bore wells or open wells would be kept covered or not, would be known by the data.

Open bore wells that are not in use could be converted to RWH or rainwater harvesting structures and for this conversion, assistance would be provided by the MWD. This was as per an official. In those houses that have multiple bore wells the unused bore wells should be converted to RWH structures. For evaluating the number of RWH structures in the Chennai city, GCC conducted similar exercise is known. It was brought out by GCCs latest estimates that around 2 lakh houses have RWH structures in good condition.
