New bylaws of Chennai Corporation- heavy fines for garbage burning

Till now, many Chennai residents have been burning garbage in their own premises. Many shop keepers have been burning garbage and construction debris are dumped in many public places etc.

Hereafter, those who are involved in these above-said activities cannot escape easily and they would have to pay the amount as fines.

It must be noted that the Chennai Corporation has approved the revised draft of the Corporation of Chennai Solid Waste Management Bylaws 2019. For ensuring effective waste management, the bylaws apply to all residents, institutions and commercial waste generators. 

The point to be noted is these bylaws specify the duties of waste generators and Corporation officials as well as penalties for violations. The corporation would abandon the practice of using landfills and dumping of mixed waste and a sanitary landfill would be set up.

It is revealed now that the residents found burning their own garbage would have to pay a fine amount of Rs 500 and the shop keepers who burn garbage would have to pay a fine amount of Rs 2000. An amount of Rs 1000 would be collected as the fine amount from those who dump garbage in the public place and burns it. It is said that those who dump construction debris in public places would have to pay a fine amount of Rs 2000 to Rs 5000.

Important information is the owners of the pets must clean up the excrements of their pets as it was their responsibility. This was as per the bylaws. The amount of Rs 5000 would be collected as fine from the organizers of the public gathering if they failed to clean up the place inside 12 hours of meeting. It must be noted that the fine amount would be doubled for the repeated violators.

User charges for solid waste management in Chennai city have been included by the bylaws. Information is residents with a built-up area of fewer than 500 sq ft would have to pay user charge of Rs 10 per month for solid waste management. User charges of Rs 100 per month would have to be paid by the residents with homes with a built-up area of more than 2400 sq ft. 

Point is Rs 50 per month is the user charges for the residents with houses with built-up area 1200 sq ft to 2400 sq ft. It is said that houses with a built-up area of 500 sq ft to 1200 sq ft would attract user charges of Rs 25 per month. An amount of Rs 3000 to Rs 5000 per month would have to be paid by the star hotels.

Important information is places of worship would have to pay Rs 500 per month, schools Rs 1500 per month and colleges Rs 3000 per month.
