Flood mitigation works to begin in vulnerable areas in and around Chennai

The news that has come out is Water Resources Department of WRD would begin flood mitigation works in the vulnerable areas in and around Chennai plus in the districts of Cuddalore in this month.

Recently, an amount of Rs 244.20 crores was sanctioned by the state government towards the second phase of the long term flood mitigation project is known. It is worthy to note that strengthening of infrastructure and addressing the inundation in and around Chennai city is important.

Officials belonging to the WRD mentioned about how the proposal for permanent measures would include the creation of reservoirs/riverine reservoirs to store excess water, improvement of macro drain network and restoring the missing links between water bodies and waterways for better floodwater flow, etc.

On Monday, 30th September, GO was issued and in that funds were sanctioned for several projects like the formation of reservoir across Orathur tributary of the Adyar River and riverine resources near Varatharajapuram, Somangalam along the Adyar and Pudhu Mavilangai village across the Cooum. It must be noted that riverine reservoirs would be created through barrages. A channel would be built from the Tambaram big tank to drain near the Tambaram-Mudichur Road Junction and the surplus course of Kilkattalai tank would also be improved.  

During 2019-2020, the second phase of the project would be taken up. It is revealed that the Paravanar and Coleron basins would also be covered to mitigate the impact of floods in Cuddalore district. Water Resources Department hopes to tackle inundation in Chennai city’s southern suburbs and Kancheepuram district in this NE monsoon even if the localities receive rainfall up to 20 cm in a day.

In the first phase of the project, works to the tune of the amount of Rs 100 crores have been completed is known. It must be noted that the portion of the work to create a reservoir across Orathur tributary has been completed and water is being stored after the recent rains.

It is said that once the work in the second phase gets over then a reservoir would be created and it would have a capacity to hold 1350 mcft of water for supplying 100 mld of water to 12 lakh residents of Chennai.
