It seems that there is a solution available now for the water crisis issue of Chennai. Yes!! Krishna water has reached near Chennai now.

On the late Saturday night, Krishna water reached the Poondi reservoir from Andhra Pradesh. It has been mentioned by an official belonging to MWD that on Sunday about 100 cusecs of water was reaching Poondi reservoir. It must be noted that it takes at least 20 days for the Red Hills reservoir to get 450 mcft and once the water reaches this level then MWD would distribute it to various parts of Chennai city.

On Sunday, zero points at Uthukottai, 17 km from Poondi was getting a flow of 600 cusecs and this was up from 350 cusecs flow on Saturday. It is revealed that at least 10 days would be taken for the level at Poondi reservoir to reach 1000 mcft. Later, the water would be released to the Red Hills reservoir (located at 45 km away from the Poondi reservoir). In the month of April, water in the Red Hills reservoir storage reached dead storage level and MWD stopped drawing water.

It was later mentioned by an officer that water managers were using pumps to draw water from the dead storage at the reservoir. He spoke about how the metro water department would open the shutters at Poondi from where gravitational force water would flow to Red Hills.

There is a water treatment plant present in red Hills and from here the water gets distributed to places like Anna Nagar, Vysarpadi, Patel Nagar, parts of Ambattur and Soorapattu. Information is there is another water treatment plant at Kilpauk and water from Red Hills goes to Kilpauk and is later distributed to places like Ayanavaram, Kilpauk, Thiru. Vi Ka Nagar, Kolathur, Perambur, and surrounding places. In addition to this, water from the reservoir also goes into a common pool and gets distributed to various parts of Chennai by tankers as well by pipelines.

The open canal connecting the Poondi reservoir and the Red Hills reservoir has been maintained by the PWD and this has been done to make sure that when Krishna water flows there would not by any obstruction. It was later revealed that regular clearing and cleaning has kept the canal in good shape. Point not be forgotten is AP government has agreed to release water from its Kandaleru reservoir for a time of 45 days and after that, the release would depend on storage level at Kandaleru reservoir.
