This has resulted in the disruptions in the garbage clearing operation in Chennai. In places like Adyar, Kotturpuram, Saidapet, Teynampet, Abiramapuram, Mylapore and Thiruvanmiyur garbage clearance got affected on Tuesday.

It must be noted that on Monday the private conservancy operator had informed workers that Chennai Corporation has extended the contract period by 6 months. Information collected is the conservancy workers insisted on getting their PF and gratuity because many workers have been denied of PF and gratuity benefits. Point to be noted is each conservancy worker has to get more than Rs 1 lakh.

In the 3 zones of Teynampet, Adyar, and Kodambakkam, more than 3000 workers have been cleaning garbage. It was mentioned by a worker that at least 10,000 workers have not received their PF even after leaving their jobs in the last 7 years. In the 3 zones, 50% of bins were reduced by the corporation. Wastes got piled up as the conservancy workers did not do their work.

The news is a new operator would be identified soon and the existing conservancy operator has been asked to address the concerns of the workers. It is known that GCC was previously known as Corporation of Madras and it is the oldest municipal body of the Commonwealth of Nations outside Britain.
