235 new swanky buses for MTC Chennai

A total of 500 new buses have been purchased at a cost of Rs 154 crores for different state corporations in TN. The chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswamy grabbed the limelight on Wednesday, 14th August 2019, when he flagged off these 500 new buses.

Information got is major portion of the buses purchased that is 235 buses would go to MTC or Metropolitan Transport Corporation in Chennai. It must be noted that SETC got as many as 118 buses and TNSTC got as many as 147 buses( 60 buses for Salem division, 25 buses for Kumbakonam division, 14 for Tirunelveli, 18 for Villupuram, 16 for Coimbatore and 14 for Madurai}. 

Important information collected is all the buses are as per the All India motor vehicle quality control AIS-052-ARAI design and approval for bus body. It was pointed that these new buses would have several features.

Foot board would be at a lower level and doors would be automatic and this would help the passengers to get inside or go out of the bus. There would also be independent seats as in MTC buses, bigger gangway that would help the passengers to stand without choking each other if the vehicle gets crowded. Other features that would be present in these new buses are announcement of various stops, a stick holding rink and remainder bell when the stops arrive for the differently able commuters, an LED route board, fan plus reverse horn with sensor for drivers and LED tube lights.

During this flagging off buses, there were also other important personalities like deputy chief minister, Mr. O. Paneerselvam, chief secretary, Mr. Shanmugam and other officials.  It is interesting to note that chief minister of TN, deputy chief minister of TN and others went inside few buses and posed for pictures. 

The presence of sleeper facilities and toilets are the newly added features in the new SETC buses. Point to be noted is Rs 1500 crores has been spent to purchase as many as 5000 new buses in 2 phases. It is worthy to mention here that in the last two and half years as many as 4381 new buses have been introduced at the cost of amount of Rs 1314 crores. TNSTC (Villupuram and Kumbakonam) received maximum number of buses 823 out of the total of 4381 buses.

MTC in Chennai received as many as 695 buses, followed by TNSTC (Salem) with 652 buses and Coimbatore with 476 buses followed by Madurai with219 buses and Tirunelveli with 201 buses.
