These days the students have lost interest to read books when compared to the past due to the lack of libraries. To make the students read the books, the school education department has issued orders to all government and government aided high/higher secondary schools to set up libraries.

The point to be noted is most schools already have functional libraries. It was mentioned by an official belonging to the school education department that smaller schools that do not have a library would work towards setting up of a library. For setting up of libraries in the above mentioned schools, district level officials would co-ordinate with the head of the schools. This was according to the official. Extra classroom in the school campus would be utilized as library in those schools that do not have a library. This has been informed by the school education department to the schools.

It must be noted that all the high and higher secondary schools are expected to have atleast 1000 books. Information is these schools have been advised to avail the subscriptions of the Tamil and English newspapers. The schools without libraries have increased from `15.7% to 16.2% and this was as per 2018 ASER survey that covered rural schools in the state of TN.

The government had initiated work to create and strengthen library facilities in 6032 government high and higher secondary schools. To access the library, the students in these schools have dedicated hours every week. It was later mentioned by some teachers that the libraries must be utilized better and the students should be encouraged to read and improve the communication skills.

Reference books as well as journals that is more relevant to the students would be available in the libraries in the schools in TN. This was later confirmed by a teacher belonging to a government school. He added that materials that would help the students tackle competitive examinations like NEET, IITJEE would be welcome.

Finally, he threw light on revamping of the syllabus and how extra reading would be highly useful for the students. A teacher nominated by the schools would help the students to make use of the library facility and encourage them to read.
