525 electric buses for the state of Tamil Nadu sanctioned now

Union government sanctioning 525 electric buses or e-buses for the state of TN on Thursday has been the subject of discussion for many now. It is worthy to mention that Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy would get 100 e-buses and smaller cities such as Salem, Erode, Vellore and Tirupur would get 50 e-buses each.

Under Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) in India scheme, 25 electric buses have been earmarked for Thanjavur. In this month of August, first 2 e-buses would be launched in the city of Chennai and these e-buses would be operated along Thiruvanmiyur- Central station and Koyambedu- Broadway routes. Ashok Leyland built electric buses would be operated by MTC or Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

It must be noted that a deal pertaining to procurement of as many as 300 e-buses through German funding (KfW) has reached the final stage now. In another 3 to 4 weeks, a formal announcement would be made. It was mentioned by an official release that Thursday’s announcement by the centre was aimed at giving a push to clean mobility in public transportation. Earlier, the ministry had invited proposals from the state for the deployment of e-buses on an operational cost basis is known.

Point is ministry received as many as 86 proposals from 26 states/ UT for deployment of 14998 electric buses. As per the release it is clear that the centre sanctioned as many as 5065 e-buses for 66 cities including 525 e-buses for 8 cities. This was based on the PISC or Project Implementation and Sanctioning Committee evaluation of proposals. 

Modernization and restructuring of the bus fleet would be possible now and this was according to senior official belonging to TN transport department. Depending on the length of the bus, the cost of e-bus varies between Rs 1.5 crores to Rs 2 crores. Information is central government would give a subsidy of Rs 55 lakhs for each of the buses to be procured.

It is now revealed that TN has to call for Expression of Interest or EOI from the manufacturers and choose those buses that would provide the best earnings per kilometre. This would be as per FAME phase 2 guidelines.

It must be noted that the body building works are completed now and trial runs are underway for the 2 e-buses to be launched in Chennai. Important information is these buses would be charged at the end of every 12 to 15 km trip for a short duration.
