Cam shredding machine of the Chennai Corporation is making huge noises now

It must be noted that this tender coconut waste goes into the landfills and it could be sorted out at the ward levels. In order to implement that, the civic body is planning to spend on a machine named ‘Cam Shredding Machine’. By using this machine it is possible to shred tender coconuts, coconut shells, vegetable as well as garden waste effectively and that would be superb.
It is now revealed that each zone in Chennai has got atleast one such cam shredding machine that costs between Rs 15 lakhs and Rs 25 lakhs. Shredding tender coconuts and converting to wood fuel could be possible now. An official spoke about how each zone would need a minimum of 3 such machines. Every day in the Teynampet zone, 40 tonnes of tender coconut waste is being collected by the conservancy workers.
It was mentioned by executive engineer of the zone, Mr. Chinnadurai that there are 50 shops in each ward. He added that one tender coconut weighs between 800 gms to 1 kg. He explained about how in the past these tender coconuts were sent to the landfills and how now they are shredded and converted to manure. It is worthy to note that one tender coconut would yield 20 gms of manure.
The official then threw light on how along with the tender coconuts others like vegetable waste, garden waste, branches of trees and other organic wastes are shredded by the cam shredding machines. The point is these would be packed together.
Presently, corporation is associating themselves with the NGO’s and other self help groups that have agreed to spend on packing. He finally hinted about setting up of small retail outlets at ward offices and parks in the next week and the manure would be sold for Rs 20 per kg. For achieving zero waste policy, employing methods to decentralize and reducing waste at the source level and ward level was the only way. This was as per the Chennai corporation commissioner, Mr. G. Prakash.
