The superb piece of news is residents belonging to few places in Madipakkam would get piped drinking water in about one and half years of time. It must be noted that metro water department started water pipe laying in March but halted the work after the code of conduct for LS elections. The metro water department has once again started to lay water pipes in Madipakkam just few days back.

It is now brought out that the residents of corporation divisions 187 and 188 where 35,000 people lived as per 2011 census and where the population has increased now would be benefited by this work regarding water pipes by the metro water department. Beginning from 2020, the project which envisages water supply for 30 years is expected to be completed by the month of March in 2021.

The project includes many activities such as construction of 50 lakh litres of overhead tank, laying pipelines for 96 km, setting up of underground tank and setting up of pump house. Information is pipes have been laid over 23 km. In the erstwhile dumping yard, Alandur municipality would provide space for the overhead water tank and work on the underground water tank would be completed soon. This was as per an official of the metro water department.

Nemelli desalination plant would provide water to the residents of the 2 divisions. It was mentioned by an official that to provide water supply to the residents of Madipakkam a connection from the existing pipeline running through Velachery area would be drawn.

Sabarigiri Foundation is a non-governmental organisation that is involved in the restoration of water bodies in Chennai city and its suburbs is known. According to Mr. V. Subramani, secretary of the above said organisation, it is clear that no groundwater sources are present in the areas comprising 2 divisions as these divisions are located close to ecologically fragile Pallikaranai marshland.

The point to be noted is though the area was developed more than 18 years back the residents belonging to these 2 divisions have not been provided with the water connections. It was revealed by an official belonging to the metro water department that the residents of these 2 divisions dependent mostly on the water tankers and packaged drinking water.

It was later pointed out by Mr. Subramani that large amounts of water was wasted when metro water held trial run before pipe laying in Puzhuthivakkam. He added that such mistakes should not be allowed to take place in Madipakkam.
