On Monday, 8th July, chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswami, caught the attention of many at the assembly. He mentioned about how Tangedco or Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited would set up 2 natural gas powered thermal units in north Chennai. These thermal units would come up at erstwhile GMR power plant premises in Basin Bridge and each would have a capacity of 730 MW.

As per some sources it is clear that most of the thermal units of Tangedco were coal based. It is revealed that only 516 MW of thermal plants based on natural gas is present in TN in the private sector. Important piece of information is the 2 new projects would cost more than Rs 5000 crores.

It was later mentioned by a senior official belonging to Tangedco that DPR would be prepared and funds would be sought from the power finance companies. This would be followed by floating of tenders. To generate power, it would take a minimum of 5 years for these thermal units. The senior official later explained how the fuel would be sourced by means of a pipeline from IOC terminal at Ennore. It was pointed out by an official that GMR site was about 30 acres and that was sufficient for LPG based units.

Interesting piece of information is diesel was used as a fuel in the initial stages by the GMR units and shifted to naptha later. The increase in the prices of naptha has led to this project becoming unviable. It should be noted that GMR had 4 units each with a capacity of 46 MW. An official spoke about how pollution was another reason for closing down the GNR plant. To prevent air and water pollution, government has allocated Rs 3000 crores to replace equipment in all thermal units owned by Tangedco.
