School for the disadvantaged kids in Mambakkam to be opened

The news that Monaco based philanthropist and president of international humanitarian organisation, Cuomo Foundation, Elena Cuomo would be inaugurating their latest initiative Amala Annai Higher Secondary School at Mambakkam, Chennai on Thursday has been the subject for discussion for many now. It is worth mentioning that this school was constructed in association with the Diocese of Chengalpet and is the foundations 7th educational project in Tamil Nadu.

For the energy efficient design, this school at Mambakkam received Platinum National Excellence rating from the Indian Green Building Council or IGBC is known. Mr. Charles Kulandai is the foundations project manager in Chennai and he spoke his heart out. It was mentioned by him that the new school would replace the previous structure by the same name as the school lacked the basic infrastructure.

He spoke about how the girl students belonging to about 22 villages in the vicinity were made to drop out after class ten. It was due to the fact that the nearest school for classes 11 and 12 was in Chengalpet that was 15 kms away. Mr. Charles Kulandai added that the new school could accommodate more than 800 students and it would have classes from 6th to 12th.

The interesting information is the new school campus about a mile distance from old school campus has been constructed using eco-friendly material around 2 green atriums. Many facilities that are available in the new school are 21 well ventilated classrooms, separate physics, chemistry and biology labs, library, audiovisual centres, auditorium, separate toilet blocks and expansive outdoor sports facilities.

It is superb to note that the school has adopted water efficient landscaping by reusing stock piled soil, plus by using native and drought tolerant free species. The school has been designed by Priya Lourduraj, a famous architect. In addition to the above, the school also utilized eco-friendly refrigerants and fire extinctions.

According to Mr. Raghavendran, chairman of IGBC Chennai’s chapter, focussing a bit on the school programme is important. He explained about how when the children are young they can imbibe ways to live in harmony with the nature and use energy economically.
