Wrong mark evaluation for class 12 leads to huge summation errors

Over 500 teachers are sent with notices for wrong evaluation of total marks scored by class 12 students. In cases of students who scored 72 out of 100, the result is issued as 27, and in case of students who have scored 81 out of 100, it is mentioned as 57.
Only upon retotaling and revaluation processes by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Government Examinations, we have come to know about the blunder in mark summation. We have observed a lot of mark variations because of such evaluation errors, says a teacher who worked on revaluation process. On Monday, the final revaluation marks were issued.
The panel members in revaluation involved scrutiny officers, mark verification officers, chief examiners, etc. They noted errors in page-wise and question-wise calculations.
These officials work to ensure nil errors in evaluation. They were unable to find out errors. Let us seek their explanation, says director of government exams, D. Vasundradevi.
Most of the mistakes were found in evaluating marks and totaling in biology. There were a botany and zoology teacher who corrected these mistakes.
The state had 72 evaluation camps where 25,000 teachers worked to correct about 60 lakh answer scripts. The last date of examination was 19th March and evaluation got over on 10th April. There were a total of 50,000 requests for answer copies of which 4500 of them had applied for revaluation. There is difference in marks observed in 30% of the total revaluation done.
The evaluation camp had district educational officers functioning as camp officers. Annually, there is significant reduction in total number of evaluation errors, he adds.
The DGE is taking stringent efforts to bring down total errors and this has significantly reduced overall errors, he says. Further, the total number of answer scripts assigned per teacher is reduced down to 12 per teacher from the previous 15, say officials.
