Southern railways introduced battery operated cars free of cost for the senior citizens some time back. The sensational piece of news is the senior citizens or aged people are required to pay amount for using the battery operated cars at the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MGR Chennai Central railway station. It must be taken into account that in the past few months the railway administration has allowed the battery car operator to charge for the services.

The point is paying money for battery operated cars is accepted by the commuters and they don’t mind paying but this has not gone down well with the social activists. It is now said that the social activists are upset regarding removal of free services without proper announcement.

A resident belonging to Nanganallur spoke his heart out. He spoke about how whenever he took his aged parents to the Central railway station Rs 10 per head was charged by the battery car driver.

It was later pointed out by a senior official belonging to southern railways that the car service was free of cost in the initial stages. He threw light on how at the time of launch the department allowed the car operator to fix the advertisements on the vehicles to monetize the operational cost. He added that the railway department changed their policy when the contract came up for renewal 6 months ago. The point is contractor was not able to make money from the advertisements and was allowed to charge the commuters and the amount was fixed at Rs 10 per head.
