Commuters in Chennai finding it difficult due to lack of bus shelters

Posted on: 08/May/2019 9:53:38 AM
It is known that in the city of Chennai more than 5 lakh commuters travel to their places of destination by using MTC buses every day. The important point is these commuters face lots of difficulties due to absence of bus shelters and the quality of basic infrastructure facilities available has been questioned now. It must be noted that the bus shelters provide great help in protecting the passengers from the scorching heat and also from the rains.

There are as many as 2600 bus stops in the CMA or Chennai Metropolitan Area and it includes part of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts also. The shocking information collected now is more than 50 percent of these bus stops do not have a shelter for the commuters. Lack of mandatory signage has made it difficult for many commuters to identify the bus stops also. It was pointed out by some passengers that those MTC buses that were going outside Chennai city limits do not have bus shelters.

In Chennai, there are few newly formed radial roads like Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam, Inner Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Iyappanthangal and Maduravoyal etc. It is now said that the presence of bus shelters in these above mentioned newly formed radial roads are rare sight.

A resident belonging to Porur who travels frequently to Kancheepuram expressed his thoughts and spoke about how outside the Poonamallee bus terminus there were no shelters. He added that those people who travel from Poonamallee face lots of difficulties.

It was pointed out by a senior official belonging to MTC that except for the 34 bus terminus, the installation and maintenance of 2600 bus shelters come under local bodies. He then revealed that as many as 1420 bus stops are under the purview of Chennai Corporation and the rest 1180 bus stops present outside the Chennai city limits come under several panchayats and municipalities. The sensational information collected is bus stops located in Egmore, Guindy (on the race course road side), Pallikaranai, Madipakkam and Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR) lack proper shelters.

It was pointed out by a resident belonging to West Manbalam that Egmore bus stop on the west side has become an important  multi transport hub. People coming from various parts of TN face confusions because of absence of bus shelters plus lack of information about the bus routes. The resident later spoke about how the bus stop on the west side remained insignificant until metro rail started their operations.
