In Chennai, major government hospitals increasing fire safety measures now

Nearly two years ago, directive regarding fire safety measures were issued by the Madras High Court and it grabbed many eyeballs is known. The news is many government hospitals belonging to the city of Chennai are putting fire safety measures now. For easy evacuation of the patients, connecting corridors and ramps are coming up now in major hospitals in Chennai. In addition to these, fire hydrant systems and fire alarms are also progressing. According to the authorities it is clear that most of the new buildings fulfill the requirements and it is in the older buildings fire safety measures are being carried out now.
It is now revealed that works are in the different stages of completion in many government hospitals in Chennai like Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital or RGGGH, Government Kilpauk Medical College or KMC Hospital, Institute for Child Health and Hospital for Children or ICH in Egmore, Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the government hospital for women and children etc.
As per Dr. R. Jayanthi, dean, MMC, for building ramps at cardiology, cardiothoracic and orthopaedics blocks, an amount of Rs 3.2 crores were sanctioned. She added that the work has been going on now. She threw light on how a new corridor connecting the urology- nephrology block and specialities block would be built. It should be taken into account that there is already a connecting corridor between Tower Block 1 and 2. Dr. Jayanthi later explained about how anther huge amount of Rs 3.7 crores has been sanctioned for RGGGH.
It is now revealed that by this amount of Rs 3.7 crores construction of separate pumps for storing water for extinguishing fire, fire extinguishers and other requirement mandated by the norms would be carried out. It was brought to light by Dr. Jayanthi that these fire safety measures has been progressing at various blocks like cardiology, cardiothoracic, neurology, orthopaedic plus in other specialities blocks. The superb information collected is nearly 50 percent of the work has been completed till now. In all the buildings, fire alarms and sprinklers have been installed now for the safety of the patients as well as others.
As per dean of government Stanley Medical College hospital or SMC hospital, Dr. Ponnambala Namasivayam, as many as 260 fire extinguishers have been purchased. He pointed out that generators and transformers must be installed on the elevated civil structures and not on the ground level. By this any unexpected incidents during floods could be avoided.
