The city of Chennai is highly congested with a huge population of more than 10 million people. The mobility in Chennai has become very difficult these days due to this over crowd are well known. There are plans to ease the mobility in Chennai city and if everything goes as planned then in the future we might have ferry services linking the rivers in Chennai city. Sensational isn’t it!!

It is worthy to mention that by the ferry services the new water transport system could be integrated with the present public transit system. Many times in the past proposal to make rivers navigable has been discussed is known. It is clear that this new plan also takes into account larger associated areas also.

An official expressed his opinion and spoke about how the system has been proposed along 2 corridors along the rivers like Cooum and Adyar in Chennai. The important information is the water transport system that has been proposed focuses on the ferry services as the mode of public transportation plus also visualizes a holistic development of the areas connected by waterways. This was according to the draft final report of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan for the Chennai Metropolitan Area.

The superb piece of information collected is this project apart from developing a ferry service also looks at a bigger concept of seamless integration of all modes of transit. The bus transport and the rail transport are included in this. According to an official, corridor 1 would run along Adyar River from Thiru-Vi-Ka Bridge to Nandambakkam for a distance of 10.6 km. He pointed out that Adyar and Satya Nagar would act as terminal interchange locations with the Metrorail.

It should be taken into account that Corridor 2 has been proposed along the Cooum River from Chennai Park Town to Nemilicherry and it would be implemented in 2 phases. The important point to be noted is phase 1of the Cooum corridor would extend from Park Town t Maduravoyal for a distance of 17.8 km. It is revealed that phase 2 would have ferry services operating from Maduravoyal to Nemilicherry over a distance of 16 km.

For phase 1 of Cooum corridor, Park Town and Maduravoyal would be designed as terminal interchange locations. Likewise for the phase 2, Maduravoyal and Nemilicherry would be developed as terminal interchange locations. In addition to these in the Adyar corridor, Saidapet and Ekkattuthangal would also be developed as intermediate interchange locations.
