The Central Board of Secondary Education or the CBSE has decided not to include the chapters that talk about democracy and diversity for 10th standard students in their social science syllabus pertaining to the academic year 2019-20. Hence these topics will not be included for the final exam, the board clarifies.

The topics that are not going to be evaluated at the 2020 board exams include

  • Democratic politics book-1

  • Democracy and diversity

  • Popular struggle and movements

  • Challenges to democracy

These aforementioned chapters shall be assessed during periodic tests, but shall not be included for the board exam, clarifies CBSE board.

The human resource development ministry has taken this call intending to reduce the overall burden on students in terms of academic curriculum. This is one of the initiatives taken in order to rationalization being done.

CBSE further states that the chapters including challenges to democracy, political reformation, democracy redefining, struggles and movements, etc. are very important for the students to understand the various kinds of people’s struggle in democracy expansion.

Basically, under democracy and diversity, the kind of relationship shared between political competition and social aspects are studied as per the Indian situations.

In her note about this, in this regard, a government school teacher says the very important chapters are in fact made optional to the students. There will be periodic tests conducted to assess their understanding of such topics, but the board exams will not test them to discover how in-depth they have understood. She further points the fact that there is social science exam for total of 80 marks.

Former chairman of NCERT, Mr. Krishna Kumar says each of the textbook belonging to the National Council of Education Research and Training or the NCERT is curated based on National Curriculum Framework 2005. The syllabus is structured so that it is flexible for teachers as well as students. He further adds that the idea of delinking such textbooks is to enhance their interest towards the subject.

The flexibility towards textbook is being withdrawn in CBSE studies, he further adds. NCERT should be at the deciding point for the curriculum, he says.
