On account of lack of justification of therapeutic use, over 150 combination drugs are to get banned, say reliable sources.

An expert panel under Chandrakant Kokate went on to probe the real efficacy of odd 500 Fixed Dose Combination (FDC) drugs. Detailed reports were submitted in front of Drug Technical Advisory Board. According to the report, there are several FDCs being irrational and hence require banning.

In order to address the proposal, the top advisory body for drugs, the DTAB has structured a sub-committee for thoroughly reviewing the report and check authenticity of information in order to help the government take a final call.

Once the government accepts authenticity of the report, there is going to be a huge blow for the domestic drug companies. A lot of drugs available in the Indian market are doubted about its therapeutic values. All the irrational drugs are thus to be cracked down. It is to be remembered there was banning of 344 such drugs in 2016.

The Kotake panel has now invested the second batch of such FDCs counting to 500 numbers.

What is FDC drug? It is a drug with multiple active ingredients used in fixed proportions.
