For less amounts of water, residents of Chennai are paying huge amount now

As the residents are unable to buy anything less than 9000 litres of water, Metro Water’s ‘Dial for water’ mobile app has now become a failure. The point is metro water is unable to deliver 6000 litre load that is preferred by most of the apartments. To cater more places, on Monday, 4th March 2019, the agency has planned to roll out 90 more tankers of 6000 litres capacity.

It has been brought out that every time a resident make a booking for a 6000 litres tanker, the sender gets automated message saying only 50 bookings were allowed. The message also sheds light on how the residents would have to book a 9000 litre tanker. The time for booking could be done between 6am to 6pm and this was as per the Chennai Metro Water Supplies and Sewerage Board or CMWSSB. For 6000 litres the cost is Rs 475 and for 9000 litres the cost is Rs 700 and these are provided as options.

It was pointed out by a Mr. Jayaraman, who is the president of T. Nagar Resident Welfare Association, that though 6000 litre water tanker was booked at 6am which was the starting time for the bookings, they were told to book the next day or book 9000 litres. He spoke about how to book higher capacity as the sump capacity itself was just 6000 litres. He then expressed his unhappiness regarding how as many as 50 orders gets booked within minutes of opening of the bookings. The truth is some residents were forced to spend more money to get less amount of water.

A resident explained about how they get 9000 litres of water by paying Rs 700. The important information gathered is just 6000 litres of water is collected. He was clear that the board instead of thrusting huge quantities of water on them must come out with ways and means to meet the requirements of the residents.

An official expressed his thoughts and spoke about how the agency has got 654 water tankers of which 225 are of 6000 litre capacity. He then explained how the presence of dozen 6000 litre water tankers in each of the 15 zones and how the narrow streets and slums get water from these water tankers. He was unhappy regarding meeting the demands of other residents. It must be noted that the metro water supplies 550 mld water to Chennai city instead of stipulated 830 mld due to the shortage of water in the reservoirs.
