Investigations into Italian marine case in jeopardy

The loss of evidence in the Voice Data Recorder (VDR) onboard the Enrica Lexie has resulted in a dead end for investigations into the murder of 2 fishermen off the coast of Kerala by Italian marines.
The VDR on a ship is similar to the black box on an aircraft. But unlike a black box, the VDR can be tampered with. Although evidence of tampering was found, the police did not chargesheet the incident and so it cannot be looked into a year after the unfortunate incident.
‘The incidents show that either the voice data recorder is not protected as per protocol or no action is taken against those tampering the data. This means loss of vital evidence and the culprits walking free’ , said an official.
