Considering the likely population by the year 2045, the government is devising an ambitious plan for vehicle parking that can accommodate parking facility to over 2 lakh 4-wheelers and 2 lakh 2-wheelers. The project was first announced by O. Panneerselvam who is the deputy Chief Minister. He announced about this Rs 2,000 crore budgeted project at the assembly on Friday. This project encompasses works to set up facilities and improve the existing ones in areas including Velachery, Koyambedu, T.Nagar, Shenoy Nagar, Saidapet, Perungudi, etc.

The project is likely to be implemented in public-private partnership mode. The Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Fund Management Cooperation will fund the project. The Deputy CM further pointed that there will be a new policy drafted for parking.

It is to be noted that the Commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation said there will be multi-level car parking amenities implemented under the smart city mission project. Such facilities are to be liad at Sivanganam Street, Thanickachalam road, T. Nagar, and Uthamar Gandhi Salai along Nungambakkam High Road of which works are already going on at Thanickachalam Road. In over 471 bus routes, about 44,000 car spaces are identified. New policies are being structured while also remembering the vehicular population in the city that is likely in another 25-30 years. The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority had conducted discussions in this regard a few years ago. There will be multiple agencies involved in the project, he added.

Among the major projects in this system, the on-street parking management system is a notable one which will ensure that all kinds of road parking will be charged. Already, a pilot project has got started at Anna Nagar. Upon implementing this across the city, there will be likely increase in the overall multi-level car parking facilities as well as underground parking facilities. The necessary infrastructural improvements will also be done. At Shenoy Nagar and Central Stations, there are going to be 2 underground parking facilities, officials add.

There are also oppositions for the project by the urban planners who claim that it is a total waste of money to invest so much towards just parking infrastructure. Managing parking is necessary, and it is a very important revenue source. Rather than investing towards this, a perfect policy has to be drafted, say officials.
