Bank employees on strike today (26th Dec)

Posted on: 26/Dec/2018 11:42:29 AM
The bank employees and the officers throughout the country are going on strike today (Wednesday, 26th December) protesting against the central government’s proposed merger of 3 Banks (Dena Bank, Vijaya Bank, and Bank of Baroda).

Because of the strike, a situation has arisen where business transactions (cash/cheque) worth Rs. 7000 Crores are likely to be blocked.

The central government proposal to link the above 3 banks was announced a few months ago. A special committee formed for this purpose has also approved the same. These 3 banks, Bank of Baroda, Dena Bank, and Vijaya Bank, are to be merged following the integration of the State Bank of India and associated banks.

The Bank Employees Unions have strongly protested against this proposal citing that this would make it difficult to recover the balance loans lent by the banks. All bank employees and officers are going on strike today throughout the country.

The general secretary of the All India Bank Employees Unions Federation, C. H. Venkatachalam, explained in this regard:

Around 10 lakh bank employees and officers are on strike today throughout the country including 80000 bank employees and officers in Tamil Nadu. There is an infrastructure arrangement, ‘Instrument Clearance Crete’, functioning in Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi for the cheque transactions.

The Chennai infrastructure consists of Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Kerala, and Karnataka. In the strike situation, around 9 Lakhs cheques worth Rs. 7000 Crores may get blocked.
