Soon a four lane road to link OMR and Chengalpattu

During the festivals and on the weekends, motorists going towards Trichy and Chengalpattu often face difficulties due to slow moving traffic on the Grand Southern Trunk Road or GST Road. This would not be there anymore in the future and the motorists would feel relieved. The reason is to provide an alternative route to Chengalpattu via OMR the National Highways department has invited bids to widen the Tiruporur- Chengalpattu Road into 4-lane stretch. This road project would be funded by MORTH or Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

There is a 21km road which connects Chengalpattu with OMR at Tiruporur and this road would be widened from 21m to 23 m with a centre median. This would be carried out at a cost of Rs 103.94 crores. An official spoke about how the motorists could reach Chengalpattu from places like Thoraipakkam, Sholinganallur, Thiruvanmiyur, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai and Medavakkam etc with ease without entering Tambaram. He explained the advantage for the motorists and said after Chennai airport- Chengalpattu elevated corridor works begins, the road would be of great use for the motorists.

One important point is NHAI has also invited bids to widen the present 24.42 km 2-lane road into 4 lanes between Natham and Thuvarankurichi under Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-1 Feeder Route category. This project would cost an amount of Rs 333 crores. It is well known that the traffic in the Trichy- Madurai NH is very high and this would decongest this national highway and provide an alternative route via Natham. It must be taken into account that the existing 44.3 km road from Madurai to Natham is widened to 4 lanes at an amount of Rs 980 crores.

The important point is the road project includes a 7.3 km 4-lane elevated bridge between Pandiyan Hotel junction and Chettikulam and widening of 2 lanes into 4 lanes from Chettikulam to Natham on the NH 785. An official later hinted that motorists from Trichy could go to Alagar temple and Madurai via Natham without travelling to Melur. Another important advantage apart from reduction in the distance is the highly congested Othakadai- Mattuthavani junction would be decongested. As per the sources, the Natham- Thiruvarankurichi and Melur- Karaikudi road is designed with all the advanced safety procedures. The road would be provided vehicular underpass and would be designed for highest speed.  An amount of Rs 105.86 crores would be spent for widening of 19.6 km stretch on the Walajabad- Keelachery road into 4-lanes. This was also later confirmed by the sources.
