Krishna water release from Andhra Pradesh to Chennai now stopped

The Chennai city has been waiting eagerly for the northeast monsoon to set so that its drinking water requirements would be met. At this point of time a piece of news has come about the release of Krishna water. On Sunday, 28th October 2018, Andhra Pradesh has stopped the release of Krishna water from the Kandaleru dam to Poondi reservoir. This has now created issues for the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board or CMWSSB. It is clear that this CMWSSB has suffered a setback due to this stoppage of Krishna water. There were some positive observations from water managers regarding the availability of stored water. They were of the opinion that the existing water storage is more than sufficient to tackle the distribution of water for the next 2 months.
It was pointed out by the sources that Andhra Pradesh released Krishna water last month in September based on the requests made by the state government. The quantum of water released from AP slowly touched 1800 cusecs. It is said that the Poondi reservoir received 1.87 tmsc of water from the Kandaleru reservoir. Against the total capacity of 11257 million cubic feet, the water storage at the 4 lakes including Poondi and Chembarambakkam lakes stood at 1798 million cubic feet.
An official belonging to Public Works Department or PWD expressed his thoughts and spoke about the importance of the release of Krishna water. He said the city of Chennai would have been in severe water crisis if Krishna water was not released. The official later spoke about how the Poondi reservoir that was once parched has got 805 mcft of water now. He later revealed about the assurance given from the AP officials regarding the release of Krishna water once when the dam gets filled again. The northeast monsoon has been elusive till now and the water managers in Chennai city were expecting eagerly about the northeast monsoon is known. The meteorological department has not been able to predict correctly about the northeast monsoon and this has added to the misery of CMWSSB.
An engineer belonging to CMWSSB spoke about how the surface water has been drawn to supply drinking water in a full- fledged manner and how as of now the other sources were not taken into consideration. The engineer later highlighted about the northeast monsoon that was around the corner and spoke about how Chennai city would be getting copious amount of rains. There would also be high amount of rainfall in the surrounding places of Chennai. An official later spoke about how Krishna water supply was stopped and how the inflow to Poondi reservoir would be there for two more days.
The water bodies present in Chennai city has become dry as the city has not received heavy rains. The scenario in the interior districts of TN was totally different as these districts have received heavy rainfall. It is important to note that after Ganga, Godavari and Brahmaputra rivers, Krishna River is the fourth biggest river in terms of inflow in India.
