Sudden strike by water tanker lorries - Water supply may be affected in Chennai

As the owners of the private water tanker lorries in the districts of Chennai and Kanchipuram have gone on an indefinite strike, the prospects of the grave risk of acute drinking water shortage have arisen.
The High Court has imposed severe regulations to utilize the groundwater resources. As groundwater resources have categorized under the mineral resources, there are difficulties for the lorries to get the groundwater.
In a sudden development, the owners of the water tanker lorries have gone on strike from yesterday (Monday, 15th October) making several demands including that the above restriction must be removed for easy access to utilize groundwater resources,
So, over 4500 water tanker lorries which operate on a regular daily basis in the 3 districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur. Thus the prospects of acute shortage for drinking water is looming indeed!
Especially, the Chennai Metro citizens have to depend on the water tanker lorries as their only source of drinking water. Apart from the Chennai citizens, the residents in colonies, hospitals, educational institutions, commercial complexes, Star-hotels, and several others depend exclusively on water tanker lorries.
The government officials explained that efforts are being taken to provide drinking water to the city residents to supply drinking water from the reservoirs of CMWSSB (Chennai Water Supply and Sewerage Board) through their owned lorries or other approved lorries from 10.00 PM to 5.00 AM. Despite this, it is gathered that if the strike of the water tank lorries continues, there are prospects of the risk of acute drinking water shortage.
