Whether the cyclone Titli turns towards Chennai?

The recently formed cyclone over the Bay of Bengal, named Titli is posing a danger to the Northeast States. The climate experts are in earnest analysis as to whether this cyclone will drift towards Chennai or towards Andhra/Odisha.

As a ‘parting kick’ before the conclusion of the southwest monsoon rainy season, there have been great changes in the climatic conditions. During last week, there were indications that the southwest monsoon was coming to a close. However, the winds blowing from the Arabian Sea gained strength and intensity suddenly and subsequently, a low-pressure zone was formed over the southwest region of Kanyakumari.

This format drifted towards Lakhdivs, and got transformed into a cyclone, ‘Luban’. Presently, Luban is prevailing towards the countries of Oman and Yemen. It is expected to create havoc in the coastal Oman region by day-after-tomorrow  (12th October).

As Luban drifted away from India, another cyclonic format has developed over the Bay of Bengal gaining intensity as a low-pressure zone. This cyclone has been named ‘Titli’ by Pakistan which means butterfly. Just as the name suggests, Titli is on the move with a crowd of clouds bearing heavy rain and revolving at 360 Degrees.

As at present, the climatologists have estimated that this cyclone may drift towards any direction. In case it drifts towards the west, it may affect Chennai, North Chennai, and Tiruvallur district. In case it drifts towards the northwest, it may approach Gopalpur in Andhra and Kalingapattinam.

In case Titli moves towards north or northeast, it may affect the regions of Odisha and West Bengal border areas.

So far, the Chennai Meteorological Centre has not issued any warnings whether Chennai or Tamil Nadu will be affected. However, warnings or alert signals have been issued to 7 states lying on the coasts of the Bay of Bengal.

Red Alert’ has been issued to Odisha. ‘Orange Alert’, indicating very heavy rains, has been issued to West Bengal, Mizoram, and Tripura,

‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued to the northern coastal areas of Andhra, Assam, and Meghalaya.

Fishermen have been banned from venturing into the sea – the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal – until 12th October. Winds with high speeds of up to 100 kmph are likely to blow. The sea will be extremely turbulent.
