New religion is not the worship of god but it is the worship of one’s own self confidence said the spiritual master Vivekananda. His interest, motto and teachings are taught and practiced in Chennai’s renowned Vivekananda house. The building reflects a marshmallow pink theme with semicircular structure built in the year 1842. It is originally built for storing big ice imported from USA and later Vivekananda stayed here briefly in 1897 for preaching his spiritual regeneration in Indian land primarily focusing on individual development with the clear combination of ancient Vedas and scientific analysis.

Later the building was converted to a dedicated place for the remembrance of the great spiritual leader of India. The museum form of the building has a photo exhibition representing the life and teachings of Vivekananda. A 3D reproduction of 1893 World`s Parliament of Religions speech by Vivekananda is displayed here in the premises.

The room where he stayed was used as a meditation center rejoicing the power of stillness and universal consciousness. All of his teachings included the philosophies of meditation that brings people’s awareness into the present moment paving way for constructive thoughts and actions.

Vivekananda house (Vivekananda Illam) is an important building for the Ramakrishna movement in Southern regions of India. The movement was established here and later converted to Mylapore. With the government’s lease the Ramakrishna Math maintain this place as a source of wisdom enclosing the teachings of the brother disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Sri Vivekananda and his spiritual bestowments.
