One of the traditional attractions of Chennai city is Mylapore where Kapaleeshwarar Temple is renowned. The locale is highly impressive and popular for it was built after the seaside original was devastated by the Portugese in 1566. One can find the architectural elements of typical Tamil Nadu temple here. The Gopuram or the temple tower is colored and has pillared mandapas with huge tank.

Legends say that Lord Shiva transformed his consort Parvati into a peacock and ordered her to worship him in his original form. Parvati abided by his orders and found a spot outside the temple’s central block. This has fetched the name Mylapore meaning town of peacocks.
