Minister for forests Dindigul C. Sreenivasan on Thursday inaugurated a forest genetic resource tree park that was developed near Vandalur on 20 acres of land.

The park has 300 species of trees from Eastern and Western Ghats regions. Researchers looking up for tree species studies can make use of this park for observational purposes and the park will have an interpretation center. The tree park has been built at a cost of Rs 1.85 crore. Forest department has allocated Rs 7.5 lakh a year for proper maintenance of the park tree.

Forest department has planted 150 ‘naaval, iluppai and nuna’ trees in the park. Some of the rare species of seeds have been produced from Kerala Forest Research Institute in Peechi. Many species have been procured from forests in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Artificial “U” shaped island with various tress and water canals flowing on both sides will be the attractive scenic spot of the park said one of the forest officials.
