Chennai Metro Train service to be extended up to Poonamallee

In order for the residents/citizens of West Chennai Metro city to avail the services of Metro train, the present project of the 2nd Phase in progress will extend to Metro service up to Poonamallee.

The Metro Train Project was conceived and executed mainly in order to reduce the severe traffic congestion in the city and also to provide a means of faster travel. The Chennai Metro Rail service is presently operating in 2 sections – Koyambedu-Alandur-Little Mount-Airport on an elevated platform and from Thirumangalam-Central-Saidapet-DMS in the underground tunnels.

As the introduction of the services was hugely popular among the public, the Chennai Metro Rail project is now being extended to cover the entire Chennai Metro City.

During the 2nd Phase of construction, with the aid/assistance from Japan, the project has commenced in the section Madhavaram-Sirueri covering a distance of 105 km at a cost of Rs. 85000 Crores.  In this project, it was planned to lay the Metro rail tracks in the section covering Madhavaram, Siruseri, Thousand Lights, Valasarawalkam, Madhavaram, and Sholinganallur.

In this situation, a decision has been taken to lay Metro Rail tracks expending from Valasarawalkam to Poonamallee. This will cover a distance of 13 km and will cost Rs. 3850 Crores.

10 Metro stations are planned including Karappakkam, Porur Junction, Sri Ramachandra Hospital, Iyappanthangal Depot, Kattuppakkam, Kumananchavadi, Karayanchavadi, Mullai Thottam, and Poonamallee bypass.

With this project being completed,  it will be an excellent avenue and facility to be availed by the residents of the West Chennai.

A metro official explained regarding this that it is planned to lay a 3-track system at a cost of Rs. 85000 Crores in the 2nd Phase covering the section up to Madhavarm-Siruseri. In order for the West Chennai residents to avail this facility, now it is being extended up to Poonamallee.

The underground tunnel track is being laid covering a distance of 13 km at a cost of Rs. 3850 Crores. There will be 10 Metro stations in this section. This project is being executed with financial assistance from several banks.
