Similar to the expenses towards private Omni buses, those heading to your hometown during weekends and during festival periods may have to spend extra of the range 10 to 15 percent even while traveling on government State Express Transport Corporation.

Recently a flexi fare system was introduced for the long route buses hailing from Chennai. There are two different tables introduced for the varied buses belonging to the SETC category, as per the order by additional chief secretary reads.

For example, an amount of Rs 1.80 per kilometer will be collected in air conditioned sleeper buses between Monday and Friday. The charge per kilometer will be increased when there is increase in demand as in festive season.

For example, if a passenger has to travel from Chennai to Madurai, during peak days, the price will be Rs 9700 to 1000 whereas the same during the remaining days of the year will be 830 to 850.

This initiative is taken after M R Vijayabaskar, the Minister of State Transport confessed that there is decrease in the total count of passengers who opt state government bus transport after hike in fare.

There was a point where SETC buses were priced higher than private counterparts. Following this, a proposal was forwarded to set up a flexi fare system in order to attract all the passengers who shifted to other means of travel other than SETC buses.

In this model, there is lesser fare during regular days, thus benefiting a lot of people including working men and women and business persons.

The public show mixed response to this change. If there is quality traveling experience, we are ready to pay out more, say a few people while other say this initiative will deter them out of choosing government buses.

It is first of all important to stick to the schedule. Those who book tickets online are mostly disappointed, says a passenger at the Koyambedu.
