Fares for 500 deluxe buses in Chennai to be changed to the ordinary bus fare

The Chennai Metro Transport Corporation has taken some bold initiatives to reduce the fares of the 500 deluxe buses operated in the city to the ordinary bus fares mainly in order to attract more passengers and also answer the protests of the public passengers.
The state government of Tamil Nadu ordered an increase in the bus fares on behalf of the State Transport Corporations on 19th January. Accordingly, as per the revised rates, the minimum fare in the ordinary buses is Rs. 5 and the maximum fare is fixed at Rs. 23. For the express buses, the minimum fare is Rs. 7 and the maximum fare is Rs. 35. For the deluxe buses, the minimum fare is Rs. 12 and the maximum fare is Rs. 48, Further, 1200 buses were being operated at the rates of deluxe buses.
Thus. The public passengers were put to great hardships. Most of the passengers switched over to the other modes of transport such as train, shared auto, call-taxis, etc. Around 30% of the regular bus passengers started ignoring the bus transport. Especially, most of the deluxe category buses were operated nearly empty with the least occupation of seats.
Subsequently, activities have now been initiated to increase the revenue of the transport corporations and also to attract more passengers. When enquiring about this, the officials of the transport corporations explained that after the recent upward revision of the bus fares, there has been a substantial reduction in the number of bus passengers. So, actions have been initiated to attract more passengers. With this, around 20000 passengers have again switched over to travel in the buses operated by the transport corporations.
The number of ordinary buses operated has been increased. Presently, more than 1250 ordinary buses are being operated. As the number of passengers in the deluxe buses is increasingly lesser, the fares of the 500 deluxe buses have also been changed as the ordinary bus fares. So, the deluxe bus minimum fare is Rs. 5 just like the ordinary buses with this being displayed on special boards in the buses.
