Chennai to have artificial intelligence system for managing and forecasting floods

The year 2015 would not be forgotten easily by the Chennai people. The city of Chennai was in severe floods in that year and as a result of that many people suffered badly. The good news that has come out now is soon the city of Chennai would have AI or artificial intelligence system for forecasting and managing floods in the urban places. Former principal scientific advisor to government of India, Mr. R. Chidambaram is of the opinion that this AI system would avert floods like the one in the year 2015.
On Wednesday, 1st August 2018, Mr. Chidambaram made his presence felt at the 14th graduation day of Anna University’s 4 departments. He spoke about how the expert system has got features for forecasting floods along with inundation maps. He also spoke about the possible means of managing floods. This AI project is funded by the principal scientific advisor’s office and many popular institutions like ISRO, IIT M, IIT B, IISC Bangalore and Anna University are involved in it.
This former principal scientific advisor later explained about the design of the model and spoke about how it involved coupling of the regional weather forecast model, tidal flow model, urban overland flow model and storm water drainage model. Enormous amount of date could be handled by each model. It is important to note that the real time operational system would be set up at the Integrated Coastal and Marine Area Management with coordination from the government of TN. Soon it is expected to be put in place. He later hinted that similar expert systems could be taken up in urban areas like Mumbai once when this project gets finished. He spoke about how such expert systems with machine learning capabilities could be considered as AI system.
The event also saw the presence of vice-chancellor of Anna University, Mr. Surappa, Mr. S. Ganesan, registrar and few others. As many as 4127 students belonging to 4 campuses like College of Engineering Guindy, MIT Chromepet, Alagappa College of Technology and School of Architecture and Planning received their degree certificates. It is known that Anna University was established in the year 1978 and is one of the highly popular educational institutes in India.
