Mini Super Markets in ration shops?

Posted on: 01/Aug/2018 12:02:30 PM
The Department of Cooperatives has decided to set up `mini-super, markets’ which sell different consumer items on a small scale, to be located adjacent to the vacant spots near the respective ration shops.

In the ration shops in Tamil Nadu, rice and wheat are given free and the items such as sugar, Bengal gram, etc., are sold at lower prices. It is well-known that several shops sell the consumer items at uncontrolled prices. As they are also of poor quality, the public does not buy them.

In this situation, the department of cooperatives has taken a decision to set up the ‘mini supermarkets’ adjacent to the ration shops.

An official of the department explained in this regard that the cooperative unions have set up and operate several large-scale supermarkets. Thousands of items are sold in this supermarket. The affluent people visit these shops and buy.

In the vacant lands owned by the cooperative department lying adjacent to the ration shops, mini supermarkets are to be set up in an area covering 200 sq. ft.  Soaps, cosmetic items, and about 100 consumer products of the 10 leading manufacturers will be sold.

The analytical survey and review regarding the procurement of items have been completed. It is planned to set up 100 mini supermarkets with 3 for each district. People of all categories in the society can visit these shops and buy.

Thus, the facility is now available for those who visit the ration shops to buy all other essential items as well. So, while the public spending less time and money on the purchase of groceries and other items, this would also be an avenue for the revenue for the cooperative unions.
