Soon Avadi in Chennai to become no-waste municipality

Located in the western Chennai city, Avadi is an important residential locality is known. This Avadi would soon become zero waste area as micro compost centres would be launched. Bharat Petroleum would be joining hands with the micro compost centres.
According to municipal commissioner, Mr. Mathivanan, this Rs 6.05 crore project that was started a month before has gained momentum now. He also spoke about the presence of as many as 17 micro compost centres across 48 wards. Scientific as well as systematic composting is possible as each centre is equipped with shredder and has 12 pits. The residents belonging to Avadi generate 48 tonnes of wet waste every day is known. Not only micro compost centres but also 21 onsite compost pits have been constructed by the municipality and these present in schools and parks would take care of wet waste from nearby places.
Mr. Mathivannan later threw light on how the bulk generators are taking steps to compost their own waste. He cited the examples of 10 apartment complexes and hotels that have started composting their own waste. Recycling of the waste is also carried out by the municipality and this is done when the wet waste is being composted. It is said that through recycling process municipality generates more than Rs 1lakh. This amount is distributed to as many as 250 sanitary workers who are directly or indirectly employed by the municipality.
One important point to note is the non-recyclable waste such as pillows and old mattresses etc are given to India cements factory in Ariyalur and these are used as fuel. Around 10 tonnes of non-recyclable waste are produced.
