Idli for Re. 1 in new canteens

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms. J. Jayalalithaa has announced that 1000 ‘reasonably-prices’ canteens will come up in Chennai. 15 such mini canteens will be opened by the end of this month. The Government has set aside Rs. 75 lakhs for this initiative.
It is reported that the price of one plate of idlis (which will have 2 pieces) will cost just Re. 1, and will be served with sambar and chutney.
Initially, it was planned that the cooking would be done in kitchens that were located in special rain-water harvesting buildings. But, that idea has been done away with and kitchens will be set up in the canteens itself. Sambar rice and curd rice will also be served in these canteens, which will be run by women’s self-help groups.
