Airport taxiway work causes flight rescheduling

Posted on: 26/Jun/2018 3:45:57 PM
It is likely that 2 international flights will be rescheduled causing the use of second runway for domestic flights. This is because the main runway is to be under maintenance work by the Airports Authority of India.

Recently, 4 rapid exit taxiways were being constructed. By July, needed works to link them with the main runway shall get completed. Hence, during daytime the runway shall remain shut for about 9 months.

In July and August, the runway shall be kept shut in 2 phases between 12.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. and in September, it shall be shut between 10 am and 6 pm.

Usually, the Saudi Airlines flight depart at 12.30 pm. This is preponed to 11.15 pm. Likewise, rescheduling will be done for Air India flight and Cathay Pacific flight.

Four rapid exit taxiways are being arranged. These are to be used for narrow-body planes. There is also going to be a parallel taxiway along the north of main runway.

There is also a rapid exit taxiway for the wide-body planes. These can be functional from international sectors. Here, more of landing and takeoff shall take place.

Most of the international flights function at night. All the necessary discussions with airlines are wrapped up. They have agreed to make use of the second runway and rescheduling of flights during closure time. A different winter slot shall be given to the Saudi flights. This will make sure that there is no clash between the closure time and its departure/arrival time, an official clarified.

These two taxiways - parallel taxiway and rapid exit - both are needed in order to cut down on the time taken for moving out of the runway once the plane is landed. With that, it would hardly take lesser than 70 seconds after landing.

Upon setting up the new taxiways, over 500 flights per day can be handled whereas the present count is just 450.
