This power back-up facility at Chennai airport is superb

For many years, the runway lights in Chennai airport have been blacking out whenever there was power outage. This wont be a problem anymore.
The superb piece of news is Chennai airport runway lights would not black out because of power outage issues. For ground lighting system for runways and visual aid facilities, power back-up facility is available at the Chennai airport now. This was confirmed by Mr. G. Chandramouli, director of Chennai airport.
He also spoke about how initially generators were used whenever there was power outage and how this Chennai airport that is 4th busiest in India found it difficult. During the times of power outage, the Chennai airport would lose the runway lights and key visual systems would guide the aircraft on the ground plus in landing or in taking off of the aircraft also. Critically important navigation system is eliminated virtually and this has resulted in safety issues also. To ensure safe landing as well as taking off, this power back-up was introduced.
It is worthy to note that Global Indian UPS Company, Consul Neowatt, has deployed 2 units of 200kVA Falcon family UPS systems in parallel redundant configuration. The aim is to protect plus to provide back-up to the ground lighting system for runways and visual aid facilities. An amount close to Rs 60lakhs has been spent on deploying these 2 units and these units are very important when the traffic is dense. In the last 6 months of time this is the second airport ground lightning system or GLS for this Global Indian UPS Company.
