Piped gas could soon be a reality in Chennai

The Oil Corporations have decided to introduce the piped connection of LPG cooking gas to houses in Chennai Metro City first.
The Oil Corporations have announced that the consumers will get this piped facility of cooking gas at lower prices and also without any shortage or wait.
The public sector undertakings Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum, and Bharat Petroleum have been selling LPG cooking gas to houses as well as commercial agencies in cylinders of different capacities. These cylinders are being sold to the customers/consumers at subsidised prices. In this scenario, the oil corporations have now planned to supply cooking gas through pipes to the houses.
The officials explained regarding this:
Presently, the cooking gas is being distributed to the houses and commercial agencies through cylinders. There are 22.5 Crores consumers using the cooking gas in the cylinder form. There are more than 1 Crore customers in Tamil Nadu. The oil corporations have encountered a variety of difficulties in the distribution of these cylinders. Further, complaints have been received that the distribution/delivery staff have been charging extra for the cooking gas cylinders.
In order to prevent the above problems, it is planned to lay underground pipes and supply LPG cooking gas through the pipes to the houses. Presently, cooking gas is being supplied through pipes in 2 cities – Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram. In this respect, the supply of cooking gas through pipes will be introduced in Chennai Metro City first. Tenders are to be floated soon for this purpose.
The activity of setting up a cooking gas source terminal at Ennore is in progress. Once this is completed, the next stage of activities will start. Pipes are to be laid underground just as is being done for water and electricity connections. The gas will be sent through the pipes under low pressure. So, it will be far safer than the system of the gas cylinders. Meters will be fixed for individual connections to know the extent of gas consumption. The cost for this will be much lower than what is being paid for the present cooking gas cylinder system. Especially, the additional amount being paid to the delivery staff will be saved. Further, there would be no necessity to book in advance and wait for days together.
