Vegetable prices soar in Koyambedu market

As the number of truckloads of vegetables arriving at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market has reduced, the prices of vegetables such as bitter gourd and carrot have shot up.
Since the onset of the summer season, there is a trend of rising vegetable prices in the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market. More truckloads of vegetables arrive from the neighbouring states of Andhra and Karnataka than the other districts of Tamil Nadu. When the number of truckload from these states reduces, the prices of the vegetables go up.
The price of bitter gourd shot up from Rs. 25 per kg to Rs. 35 per kg. The price of carrot went up from Rs. 18 per kg to Rs. 25 per kg. The price of small (sambar) onion is Rs. 33 per kg. Brinjal sells at Rs. 20 per kg. Radish sells at Rs. 20 per kg. Beans sell at Rs. 55 per kg. Snake gourd sells at Rs. 15 per kg.
Tomato sells at Rs. 15 per kg. Onion sells at Rs. 14 per kg. Potato sells at Rs. 20 per kg. Broad beans sell at Rs. 30 per kg. Lady’s finger (okra) sells at Rs. 15 per kg. Cabbage sells at Rs. 6 per kg. Beetroot sells at Rs. 23 per kg. Drumstick sells at Rs. 23 per kg.
When enquiring about the increase in the prices of bitter gourd and carrot with the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable traders, they explained that with the recent onset of southwest monsoons rainy season, the harvesting of vegetables had just been completed and the sowing of new plants has started. So, the quantity of some vegetables dispatched has reduced and the prices have gone up. The vegetables will continue to be sold at higher prices until September.
