Suspension of toll collection on EMRIP roads

Posted on: 07/Jun/2018 11:23:14 AM
The recent update from the state highways department has confirmed the suspension of the plan to levy toll on the vehicles using the roads leading to Ennore-Manali Road Improvement Project (EMRIP). The roads connects Chennai ports to Ennore and so the earlier plan to incorporate toll collection was formed by the State Highways and minor ports department.

The government officially announced the toll collection of Rs 35 to Rs 220 for various categories of vehicles passing the roads of EMRIP for a single journey. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had plans to maintain the EMRIP connecting roads of Ennore Expressway connected to northern sector of Inner ring road, Manali Oil Refinery and Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchettu Road. These roads were re-constructed and facilitated for a budget of Rs 600 Crore resulting in the decision of levying the toll booth for the passing vehicles. This move was strongly opposed by the regular truckers and local users of the road leading to the suspension of the toll plan.

The responsibility was given to NHAI in maintaining and collecting the total capital cost and then reducing the charges up to 40 percent. Now after the oppositions from public and people mentioning the badly maintained roads of the Ennore-Manali area, the government issued a fresh order suspending the toll collection plan.

Fuel prices hike and other taxation policies are already disrupting the regular trading and loading of goods in many ways. So the governmental order to suspend the toll collection was a big relief for the truckers, commercial vehicles and other local users.
