Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officially announced the cost of direct metro train service from Central to Airport as Rs 70. This metro line will cover a journey of 25 km in 60 minutes.

Two underground metro lines between Nehru Park and Central and from Little Mount to AG-DMS are already opened for the commuters after several missing deadlines.

Six stations on two key underground lines between Nehru Park and Central Metro and from Little Mount to AG-DMS will open on Friday, after missing several deadlines for past two years.

The direct service linking Central will operate between two corridors and the stretch between May Day Park and AG-DMS through Airport operates with a single corridor. The arrangements are in the final phase of the construction and will be completed soon said the reports of CMRL.

Many commuters report the high prices of cabs and auto fares in the city for travelling between Central and Airport. Now the metro service at a cost of Rs 70 is considered to be fair to an extent when compared to other modes of transport. Direct train connects the two spots by taking a roundabout through Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar and Koyambedu.

Long distant trains in Chennai Egmore and Central connecting Chennai with various locations of the country are easily connected through these metro lines from remote parts of the city. Linking of MRTS stations with Metro stations through subways makes the travel across the city easier and affordable for the commuters. Chennai Egmore to Airport fare for the metro train is fixed as Rs 60 and the ride from Egmore to CMBT costs Rs 40.

Chennai Metro fares are the second highest among all other metro train services operating in the country. One of the officials from CMRL said that hiking the fare gradually may lead to reduction in number of commuters and also resulting in an economic imbalance of the finance zone of metro trains ticketing. These are all the reasons to fix the price as Rs 70 for the direct link of Central and airport at the initial stage itself.

In Central Metro the construction of upper track, corridor 2 connecting to St Thomas Mount is already completed. But the lower track linking Washermenpet to the Chennai Airport via Anna Salai is under construction and the opening date will be announced soon said the sources of CMRL.

Though there are several internal connections in Metro lines making the city travel simple but many commuters complains the setting up of costly fares will not attract bulk commuters like family or big groups. When counted for 10 to 12 members in a single group of family or friends the fare may be slightly higher than the normal cab fare and auto fare.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) partly funded the new metro lines that were recently opened. A press release from Japan Consulate-general explains the punctuality and high frequency of metro rail services providing comfort for commuters in every possible way. It also mentioned that Japan feels very proud in supporting the construction of the Chennai Metro rail services.
