The trend of increasing vegetable prices in the Koyambedu market

The prices of vegetables have shown an increasing trend in the last few days at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market.

Yesterday, broad beans were sold at Rs. 30 per kg and beans, at Rs. 35 per kg.

Large quantities of vegetables arrive at Chennai Koyambedu vegetable market from the neighbouring states of Andhra and Karnataka. Comparatively, only lesser quantities of vegetables arrive from the other districts of Tamil Nadu.

Recently, as the yield of vegetables has gone down, the quantities of vegetables arriving from the neighbourng states have reduced considerably.

As on yesterday (Sunday, 15th April), the trend of vegetable prices in Rupees per kg:

Beans – 35, sambar (small) onions  - 32, broad beans – 30, lady’s finger (okra) – 20, bitter gourd – 15, drumstick – 20, brinjal – 15, and potato – 21.

Tomato is sold at Rs. 10 per kg, onion at Rs. 13 per kg, and radish at Rs. 10 per kg.

The Secretary of the Koyambedu Vegetable Traders’ Association, informed that as the quantity of arrival has reduced, the prices of the vegetables have gone up. The vegetable prices will remain high till August.
