From Sunday, e-way bill gets mandatory for interstate goods transport

It is mandatory for transporters to carry e-way bill when they transport goods from one state to the other starting from 1st April. So far, until this week, over 11 lakh registrations are made on e-way bill portal.

This rule is applicable for all businesses and transporters that involve transporting goods of worth above Rs 50,000 between states.

It was on 1st February that the e-way bill for goods and services tax was first set up. This measure is believed to be an anti-evasion measure that would back tax collection by curbing cash-based transactions.

The system however was put on hold because of the glitches that developed in obtaining permits. As there were several intra-state e-way bills being generated on the portal, the system had developed a snag.

Hence, the GSTN has developed a new system that is fool-proof. Accordingly, the e-way bill can only be generated in case of goods transportation done from one state to the other via roadways, railways, airways or vessels.

Speaking about this, an official said attempts made to generate e-way bill for intra-state goods movement shall be blocked. The e-way bill rollout shall begin for inter-state and intra-state goods movement from 1st April and 15th April respectively, according to an announcement by the GST Council earlier this month.

The system is designed in such a way that it can produce 75 lakh inter-state e-way bills on a daily basis without any kind of glitch. The National Informatics Centre has designed and developed the system, to note.

From April 1, the system should work fine, says NIC sources. Extensive tests were carried out by NIC to ensure that the system is free of snags, added an official. Further stating, he pointed out that the transporters and businesses are requested to enroll on their portal for trial on generating e-way bills.

Until this week, over 11 lakh entities are registered on the portal. This can be set against the 1.05 crore registered businesses under GST and the 70 lakh who file monthly returns.
