The trend of rising prices for vegetables in Koyambedu

As the intensity of heat has been gradually increasing in Tamil Nadu as well as its neighbouring states, the growth/yield of vegetables has fallen. So, there is a reduction in the number of truck loads of vegetables arriving at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market. Subsequently, there has been a trend of daily gradually increase in the vegetable prices.
The intensity of heat has started rising in the state of Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring states. Actually, higher temperatures have been recorded in Andhra and Karnataka as compared to Tamil Nadu. So, there has been a reduction in the yield/growth of vegetables. This has led to a reduction in the number of vegetable truckloads arriving at Chennai Koyambedu vegetable market. In fact, over the last 2 weeks, there has been a gradual increase in the vegetable prices.
Okra or lady’s finger which was sold at Rs. 15 per kg last week, was sold at Rs, 25 per kg yesterday. The beans, which was sold at Rs. 20 per kg last week, is sold at Rs. 25 per kg.
The secretary of the Koyambedu fruits, Flowers, and vegetables traders’ association P. Sukumar explained in this regard:
‘The intensity of heat has started rising in Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring states. The yield of vegetables has come down leading to a reduction in the arrival at Koyambedu. Thus, there are prospects of the vegetable prices even going further up from the 1st week of April.’
