Local body polls likely to take place in March

There is abuzz among the ruling party as they speculate local body elections to commence in March this year. Based on census 2011, the state government may roll out orders to delimit the wards and seats for SC and ST and women. In October 2016, the civic polls were due.
According to a development, on 29th December, the state government has issued an order where it has extended the term of office with special offers for 6 months. So, in the next 6 months, elections are unlikely. The local body polls are speculated to take place in March or by April at the max, as there are vacancies by over a year.
In its part, the state election commission has started finalizing delimited wards and have come up with plans to hold the zone-wise review, said a senior leader. The committee shall discuss with the government ahead of finalizing a date. This should not clash neither with board exams or state budget.
According to earlier orders by the Madras High Court, the state election commission has told to hold the polls until 17th November. The orders were then reversed as per the plea against the commissioner and secretary of the state election commission about polls.
