How to register marriage?

Marriages must be registered for the government records. Thus would apply to all religious practices.

There was a public and political parties demand that marriage registrations must be made compulsory. Accordingly, most states made it compulsory. Tamil Nadu also legislated the Compulsory Marriage Registration Act and this was enacted as a Law on 24th November 2009.

So, from the date mentioned above (24th November 2009), whenever marriages are performed by whatever religious groups, though it might be registered under other Laws, it must be registered under the Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriage Act, 2009.

Where to register?

The marriage must be registered in the nearest Registrar office located in the domain of the place of marriage.

The marriage must be registered within 90 days of marriage. Registration Fee is Rs. 100.

If it was not possible to register the marriage within 90 days, it can be registered in the subsequent 90 days by paying additional charges (Rs. 150).

There are special forms for registering marriages. This form is available on the internet and the registrar offices. The form must be filled up and attached to the application for registration and submitted in the office. 2 sets of photographs of the husband and wife must also be attached.

The copies of the residential proof of the married couple, and Identity Proofs must also be attached, The marriage invitation letter also must be attached. The religious personnel who performed the marriage must sign in the application letter for marriage registration.

2 other witnesses apart from the religious officials must also sign the application.

Further, the promise that no dowry was demanded/paid should be given as detailed in the application form.

In case the marriage is not registered before the specified deadline, it is a crime. It includes punishment as well. A penalty of Rs. 1000.

An information is passed around that certain temples where the marriages are performed have arrangements for marriage registration too.
