Chennai to receive treated water from quarries

Posted on: 09/Jun/2017 12:14:08 PM
Chennai city that has recently been experiencing water scarcity will be receiving processed water from quarries in Kancheepuram district.

Following many rounds of tests and analysis, treatment of 30 mld water is set to commence now and this treated water will be supplied to all residents in the city. The total project estimate is Rs 13.63 crore. The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board has obtained positive results, say Chennai Metro Water Board sources.

The reservoirs are all turning bone-dry and the ground water resource is getting eventually depleted. The last option left is now to tap water from quarries.

Amidst these, environmentalists say that the water in these quarries carry very high levels of metal deposits. This can have adverse health effects when we use it for drinking or cooking purpose. Officials explain that the metro water authorities have chosen quarries that have safe water.

As per sources from the CMWSSB, about 22 quarries at Sikkarayapuram near Mangadu were involved in feasibility studies. Experts from the Kings Institute, Centre for Environmental Studies and Geological department Anna University worked to affirm the stagnant rainwater quality and all of these showed positive results.
