Posted on: 29/Apr/2017 2:25:52 PM
Very soon, in not more than 5 months, parts of north Chennai are to be linked with the remaining parts of the city via underground tunnels. Between Washermenpet and Korukkupet, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited shall wrap up the tunneling work within September 2017. This will cover a distance of 2km. With this, Chennaites can easily travel to the metro cities in north Chennai.

The phase-1 extension between Washermenpet and Wimco Nagar covering 9km distance is now underway in its construction. According to CMRL officials’ statement, excavation works are completed and tunneling at 180m stretch towards Korukkupet has started. Works at Theagaraja College will begin by June month. By August this year, tunneling works are likely to be completed. However, we have given a cushion period of 1 more month to ourselves. Hence, by September, the entire tunneling will be over, said metro rail official.

This 2 km stretch will have 2 stations. One at Theagaraja College and other one at Korukkupet. Beyond this limit, metro will be functional at elevated corridor. It was in July 2016 that the former Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha had laid the 2km underground stretch. This was one month after the approval for the project by the centre. The project estimate is Rs 3770 crore.
